Inclusive indoor skatepark in Winnipeg

Updated: January 2023

Short Term

  • Winter 2022-2023
  • Create an inclusive indoor skatepark located in an accessible, central location
  • Staffed by volunteers with some skateable elements built, and some provided by the skate community (rails, boxes, kickers)

Long Term

  • Within ten years
  • City of Winnipeg owned and operated indoor skatepark
  • Facility to accommodate all skill levels
  • Progression opportunities for the Olympics

  • Starting a Go Fund Me to raise capital for a new inclusive indoor skate space
  • Collecting signatures to bring forward to city council in order to show the demand for an indoor skateboarding facility in Winnipeg exists
  • Bringing the community closer together, standing with Indigenous and 2SLGBTQIA+ people that have been marginalized and discriminated for far too long

  • Lease
  • Utilities
  • Material costs for construction of obstacles

  • Minimum of 7000 square feet
  • Accessible by transit
  • Heated
  • Relatively smooth concrete floor
  • Washrooms
  • Open floor plan or able to tear down walls/dividers easily
  • Ceiling height of at least 14 feet

  • The City of Winnipeg has over 15 outdoor skateparks
  • Skateboarding in Winnipeg is growing in active participants year over year
  • There is a considerable lack of programming and access for skateboarding in Winnipeg during our long winters
  • There are numerous recreational projects currently underway in Winnipeg, none of them include skateboarding facilities

  • The Edge indoor skatepark located at 333 King Street Winnipeg is a private facility
  • In October 2022 YFC had restricted the park to only youth aged 12-17 for a total of four hours per week
  • Parts of the skateboarding community have reached out to offer volunteer staffing in order to operate the park for Winter 2022/2023, YFC has declined the offer
  • Youth For Christ has received millions in government public funding over the past 11 years
  • YFC is a non-profit organization that has long history for discriminatory policies against 2SLGBTQIA+ people which goes against Manitoba's Human Rights Code
  • YFC are signatories of the Winnipeg Indigenous Accord, and have made other promises to the indigenous community, yet fail to align their policies and practices for all to feel safe and included in their facility
